Cheap Electric Cars To Lease For Less Than £200 A Month

Author: msblog@admin | Updated: 23rd April 2023

After the UK government announced a ban on sales of new petrol and diesel cars by 2030, there’s been a surge in interest from car buyers searching online for electric cars.

BuyaCar reported a 500% increase in searches from its customers for EVs shortly after the news came out.

One of the main concerns about switching to an EV is affordability, as this technology is often more expensive outright than an ICE (internal combustion engine) alternative. So, now more than ever people need cheap electric cars if mass uptake of these vehicles is expected in the next decade.

Looking to switch to a plug-in car without spending over the odds? Check out our guide to the best electric cars available for less than £200 a month from Moneyshake.

1. Nissan Leaf – N-Connecta 5dr Auto, from £195 per month*

Cheap electric cars - Nissan LEAF

*Price accurate at the time of writing

“As one of the first mass-market modern electric cars, the Nissan Leaf is a pioneer for EVs. Some questionable design features for the debut models have been rectified too, resulting in a much smarter, well-equipped model suitable for the family.”

Cameron Hale, Moneyshake Car Reviewer

Key features

The N-Connecta trim of the Nissan Leaf are the next grade up from the entry-level Acenta spec. For that reason, they come with a decent amount of equipment as standard and are our pick of the bunch.

  • 17″ alloy wheels
  • 8″ touchscreen infotainment system with sat nav
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration
  • Heated seats and steering wheel
  • Part synthetic leather/part cloth upholstery
  • Intelligent around view monitor with moving objects detection, plus front and rear parking sensors
  • Privacy glass

Range

All versions of the Nissan Leaf up to the high-mileage ‘e+’ variations have a WLTP (Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicles Test Procedure) range of 168 miles on a full charge.

If you tend to do a lot of long-distance journeys for work each day and need more battery life from your Leaf, you might want to look to the bigger 62kWh battery e+ N-Connecta and e+ Tekna models. They add another 71 miles to the total range, increasing the total of 239 miles.

2. Fiat 500 – 70kW Pop 24kWh 3dr Auto from £179 per month*

New Fiat 500 Electric

*Price accurate at the time of writing

“Everything about the Fiat 500 Electric is synonymous with a successful electric city car. From its easy-to-park dimensions and retro-chic styling, to the impressive 115-mile range and robust onboard tech.”

Cameron Hale, Moneyshake Car Reviewer

Key features

The Fiat 500 Electric range is nice and simple, with a choice of a 24kWh or 42kWh battery version available. If you drive more than 100 miles per week, we recommend choosing the bigger battery spec – you’ll get 199 miles between charges according to the latest WLTP range tests.

There are also a number of styles available which let you personalise the setup of your Fiat 500. All of them are well-equipped so you won’t be disappointed either way. Here are some features of the entry-level Pop spec in question.

  • 7″ TFT instrument cluster
  • LED daytime running lights and rear lights
  • Autonomous emergency braking
  • Front and rear parking sensors
  • EV mode selector
  • Smartphone cradle
  • Traffic sign recognition
  • Intelligent speed assist

Range

The 115-mile range of the base Fiat 500 Electric model is probably going to be enough for most drivers interested in a car like this. That is, a city electric car designed for commuting. With a home charger you’ll still be able to have the occasional long-distance journey at the weekends too, so long as you factor in a quick charge at some point.

You always have the option of the bigger 42kWh battery pack which bumps up the range between charges to a healthy 199 miles. This is usually the expected standard by which all EVs are measured against these days, so it’s well worth a punt for a bit more money per month in our eyes.

Charge time and cost*

*Based on information from Zap-Map.

  • Standard 7kW home charger: 0-100% charge in 6 hours for £6.70
  • Public 100kW rapid charger: 20-100% charge in 30 minutes for £10.10

3. Renault Zoe – i GT Line R135 50kWh 5dr Auto, from £198 per month*

Cheap electric cars - RENAULT ZOE

*Price accurate at the time of writing

“Just like the Leaf, the Renault Zoe has been on the EV scene for some time now. During this time it’s remained at the affordable end of the market too, while getting a sportier facelift and superb performance enhancements.”

Cameron Hale, Moneyshake Car Reviewer

Key features

Renault Zoe GT Line models are top of the range and it’s easy to see why when you consider what’s included as standard.

  • 16″ alloy wheels
  • Front parking sensors and rear parking camera
  • Blind spot warning
  • Lane departure warning, with lane keeping assistant
  • R135 100kW motor
  • Synthetic leather/fabric (recycled) upholstery
  • Automatic air con
  • Cruise control + speed limiter
  • Slow speed pedestrian warning
  • Traffic sign recognition

Range

All Renault Zoe models get what’s considered the ‘crème de la crème’ of EV ranges – that being at least 200 miles on a single charge.

Because R135 specs get a more powerful electric motor over standard versions – which has an additional 27bhp and is a considerable 1.9 seconds faster over the 0-60mph sprint – it has slightly less battery range from prioritising performance.

WLTP range tests have come back with a total range of 240 miles for the GT Line R135 spec, which is five miles less than the 80kW motor versions. Even still, this is hardly a difference which will concern most drivers, so it’s bound to be a choice between how much performance and tech-savviness you want from the car.

Charge time and cost*

*Based on information from Zap-Map

  • Standard 7kW home charger: 0-100% in seven hours for £8.00
  • Public 50kW rapid charger: 0-80% in 45 minutes for £12.00

4. Hyundai Ioniq Electric – 100kW Premium 38kWh, from £186 per month*

New Hyundai Ioniq Electric

*Price accurate at the time of writing

“The Hyundai Ioniq EV is bang on-trend, with a near-200-mile range and an affordable price tag. Its practical size and surprisingly strong performance makes it very versatile too. Don’t forget that brilliant 5-year warranty either!”

Cameron Hale, Moneyshake Car Reviewer

Key features

There are only two versions of the Hyundai Ioniq Electric available to lease, with this ‘Premium’ model being the entry-level trim. It may sit beneath the more luxurious ‘Premium SE’ spec, but in keeping with its name there’s still plenty to get excited about.

The Hyundai Ioniq Electric is one of our customers’ favourite EVs to lease too!

  • 16″ alloy wheels
  • 10.25″ touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto
  • Heated front seats
  • Parking system with rear camera and rear parking sensors
  • Adaptive cruise control with stop and go
  • Lane keep assist with lane departure warning system
  • Autonomous emergency braking
  • Hill start assist control
  • Regenerative braking system
  • Driver attention alert system
  • Wireless phone charging pad

Range

With a 193-mile range on a single charge, the Hyundai Ioniq Electric isn’t class-leading, but for most drivers it will be enough.

If you need a range that’s north of 200 miles for a car that’s similar in style, you’d need to look to the Hyundai Kona 64kWh model. You’ll get around 245 miles between charges for this car, but lease prices are closer to the £250 per month mark.

Charge time and cost*

*Based on information from Zap-Map

  • Standard 7kW home charger: 0-100% in 5.5 hours for £6.10
  • Public 50kW rapid charger: 20-80% in 40 minutes for £9.20
