After the UK government announced a ban on sales of new petrol and diesel cars by 2030, there’s been a surge in interest from car buyers searching online for electric cars.
BuyaCar reported a 500% increase in searches from its customers for EVs shortly after the news came out.
One of the main concerns about switching to an EV is affordability, as this technology is often more expensive outright than an ICE (internal combustion engine) alternative. So, now more than ever people need cheap electric cars if mass uptake of these vehicles is expected in the next decade.

The Fiat 500 Electric range is nice and simple, with a choice of a 24kWh or 42kWh battery version available. If you drive more than 100 miles per week, we recommend choosing the bigger battery spec – you’ll get 199 miles between charges according to the latest WLTP range tests.

Range
The 115-mile range of the base Fiat 500 Electric model is probably going to be enough for most drivers interested in a car like this. That is, a city electric car designed for commuting. With a home charger you’ll still be able to have the occasional long-distance journey at the weekends too, so long as you factor in a quick charge at some point.
You always have the option of the bigger 42kWh battery pack which bumps up the range between charges to a healthy 199 miles. This is usually the expected standard by which all EVs are measured against these days, so it’s well worth a punt for a bit more money per month in our eyes.

Range
All Renault Zoe models get what’s considered the ‘crème de la crème’ of EV ranges – that being at least 200 miles on a single charge.
Because R135 specs get a more powerful electric motor over standard versions – which has an additional 27bhp and is a considerable 1.9 seconds faster over the 0-60mph sprint – it has slightly less battery range from prioritising performance.
WLTP range tests have come back with a total range of 240 miles for the GT Line R135 spec, which is five miles less than the 80kW motor versions. Even still, this is hardly a difference which will concern most drivers, so it’s bound to be a choice between how much performance and tech-savviness you want from the car.

Range
With a 193-mile range on a single charge, the Hyundai Ioniq Electric isn’t class-leading, but for most drivers it will be enough.
If you need a range that’s north of 200 miles for a car that’s similar in style, you’d need to look to the Hyundai Kona 64kWh model. You’ll get around 245 miles between charges for this car, but lease prices are closer to the £250 per month mark.
